Steelers' Najee Harris Helps Renovate California Homeless Shelter

For those of you who are football fans, Najee Harris needs no introduction. For those who are unfamiliar with the sport, Harris may appear to be just another football player.

However, that is only half true. Harris is not just another football player rather a very good one at that. He was the star running back at the University of Alabama and was drafted by the Pittsburg Steelers as the 24th overall pick in the NFL draft.

As great of a player as he is on the field, off the field he is an even better person! Harris, a California native, returned home to the homeless shelter that he stayed at during various times throughout his childhood. When Harris was 12 years old, his mother and four siblings were homeless and moved from shelter to shelter around the Bay Area at one point even living in a car. When he went back, "he and more than 100 volunteers removed the floors, walls, fences, gardens, play areas and veterans’ housing."

Harris partnered with the Lowe's Home Team to bring new life to the Greater Richmond Interfaith program in Richmond, located 12 miles north of Oakland. However, it's not just renovating that Harris does when he's there. He also "tries to keep the kids’ minds off their struggles" emphasizing the message that you can always change your situation. Additionally, he has even taken some of the kids to the Giants' (baseball) games when he's been in town!

We should all be inspired from this story and take a play out of Najee's playbook. We at the Crystal Council challenge you to be active and give back to your local community. Be the change you want to see!
