8 Phases of the Lunar Cycle

The lunar cycle is comprised of eight phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent. These eight phases are traditionally recognized in Western astronomy as visual indicators of a change in time and energy.

New Moon - 0% illumination

The new moon marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle. Setting intentions, fresh starts, imaging more and the planting of seeds; this is a time for resting and rejuvenating.

Waxing Crescent - 1-49% illuminated

During a waxing crescent, taking the steps towards the new ideas, habits and intentions envisioned is beneficial.

First Quarter - 50% illumination

The first quarter moon is a halfway point ideal for reviewing progress thus far and making necessary adjustments.

Waxing Gibbous - 51 - 99% illuminated

Healing intentions are amplified during this time of expansion and growth; a time to enjoy self care.

Full Moon - 100% illumination

The energetic intensity of a full moon may be felt before and after it’s arrival, like a ripple effect. The full moon is a time of release, amplified emotions and increased intuition. Full moons have long been renowned as an indicator of harvests and celebrations.

Waning Gibbous - 99 - 51% illumination

The waning gibbous is the first phase of the end of the moon cycle. This phase is for reviewing information received and harvests reaped during the full moon.

Last Quarter - 50 % illumination

Mirroring the first quarter moon, the last quarter moon is a time to seek balance. This is a beneficial time for work regarding the subconscious, as well as gathering of more information to assist the cause.

Waning Crescent - 45 - 1% illumination

The last visible phase of the moon cycle is the waning crescent. Cleansing practices and deep cleaning is best done during this time.
