So You're the Proud Owner of a Crystal... Now What?

Crystal newbies and crystal experts, we all have to start at the same place: the introduction.  With the attention to crystals growing on social media and a new openness to the spiritual growing, the audience for these ancient sources of healing and wisdom expands.  Where do we start?

If we’re doing introductions, I might as well start with myself.  My name is Diana Fuller, and in 2018 I decided to trial all things wellness and holistic through a podcast called Watered Grass. While I wanted to help others to find their own healing path, I can see now that I was also learning to live more authentically and tend to my own needs.  Although the show had a variety of guests, I couldn’t help but notice the ‘rock’ collections many of my guests had. From yoga studios, to reiki practitioners, to therapists, I encountered crystals of all kinds and sizes. This past winter I had the pleasure of being introduced to the Crystal Council, and have dove in fully to the world of these healing gems.

When the Crystal Council asked me to contribute to their blog, I was thrilled.  Having recently rediscovered a love of writing, this seemed like the perfect transition.  The thought then hit me- what does a newbie to crystals have to say? Unlike my podcast, I cannot rely on my background in psychology or the expertise of a guest.  Instead, a quote I heard at an Emotional Intelligence conference came to mind: Be the learner, not the knower. (Thank you Marc Brackett! ) There are several different voices a blog can take.  There’s the guru- the knowledgeable one, who has all of the answers.  As someone who still has to refer back to the Crystal Council site from time to time to remember what a crystal is used for, that did not feel authentic.  There’s also the sherpa voice. Having started at the bottom, the sherpa shows the path to enlightenment or healing because they’ve taken the journey themselves.  That didn’t feel quite right either. While I have done my research in the past few months, I still see myself as more of a student than a teacher. Instead, I decided to take on a more vulnerable voice: the guinea pig.  Together on the Crystal Council blog I’ll be transparent about my trials and errors in the world of crystals, and perhaps give you a few ideas along the way.

Now that we’re officially introduced, let’s get back to business.  Maybe you’ve gotten a box from the Crystal Council, or are thinking about it.  If you aren’t sure where to start, I recommend their Seeker Box that will give you a great foundation.  What do you do once the crystals arrive? Here are a few quick ideas based on what I myself have tried:

  • Pocket them: Your own, of course! At the start of my day, I ask myself what I need today.  Do I need a little more self-love? Protection? Creativity? I choose a crystal based on that and keep it in my pocket for the day.  When I need a boost of whatever it is, I know healing is within reach. Sometimes just knowing it’s there gives me the push or support I need in a difficult moment.

  • Wear them: The Crystal Council offers crystal jewelry, as well!  This is an easy way to keep your crystal with you all day (especially if you don’t have pockets, see above).  If you’re crafty, wire wrapping your own crystal is also a possibility. There’s plenty of tutorials online!

  • Meditate with them: Do you meditate, or plan to start? I like to choose a crystal based on my intention to either hold in my hand, keep close by, or even place on the chakra I’m clearing (more on that in the future). A great way to enhance the energy of your meditation.

  • Keep them in a room with meaning: My boyfriend is getting used to the fact that each room in the house has dedicated crystals.  In my office, I keep pyrite and other crystals related to manifesting and creativity. My bedroom has rose quartz.  I even have crystals in my work bag to take on interviews to keep me inspired and energized.

As we go along this blogging journey together, I plan to dive into each of these options a bit more in-depth. I’m always up for a new adventure- if you have a specific question we can explore together, send me an email at www.wateredgrass.com and www.selfandsisters.com
