Tarot Explained: The Hermit

The Hermit is associated with solitude, withdrawal from society or crowds, introspection, the attainment of higher wisdom through withdrawal, and loneliness.  Spiritual enlightenment, meditation and contemplation are also themes of the Hermit.  A cloaked man holding a lantern at the top of a mountain lights the way for those on a quest for higher knowledge.

 Symbols & Characteristics

The Hermit is represented by the mutable Earth sign Virgo, which is ruled by Mercury.  Yellow-green, licorice and the musical note F are associated with the Hermit card.  The body parts ruled by the Hermit card are the small intestine and the pancreas.  Nine, the last single digit in our numerical system, is associated with this card; metaphysically, the number nine corresponds with understanding, awareness and achievement.  The arched body of the Hermit closely resembles the shape of the number 9.

This archetype is commonly depicted as an elderly man with a white beard, although technically the card is not associated with either gender specifically.  The Hermit is shrouded in a grey cloak signifying wisdom and neutrality.  Holding his staff in his left, or receiving hand, the Hermit displays willingness to apply information; the lantern in his right hand, or giving hand, provides those with guidance.  The bright light of the lantern in the Hermit’s right hand acts as a beacon to others, shining down from the mountaintop; the mountain represents a great feat and the light is the knowledge which has been obtained.  From atop the mountain, the Hermit is able to reflect on the journey.  The six-pointed star within the lantern references the Seal of Solomon, a symbol of wisdom.  Embodiment, union and completion are represented by the six-pointed star as well; this star also is seen to represent the interconnectedness of consciousness and subconsciousness as well as male and female energy.  The two triangles which create the six-pointed star also allude to the elements; the upward pointing triangle represents fire and air, while the triangle pointing downward represents water and earth.

Reading The Hermit Upright

The Hermit card depicts the wise one archetype, a teacher of spiritual, mental or physical knowledge.  The Hermit is associated with introspection, quiet contemplation and the search for meaning, as well as wisdom gained through experiences.  In a reading, this card may be a suggestion to take time away from others to replenish oneself emotionally, mentally or physically.  The Hermit is also a card which calls for prudence, careful attention and discernment.

Reading The Hermit Reversed

The Hermit reversed in a reading signals time for the querent to pause and review.  Making uninformed decisions, acting unwisely and the inability to learn from experience are also associated with the Hermit reversed.  Reversed, this is also associated with timidity, alienation and narcissism.
