Tarot Explained: The Emperor

The Emperor represents authority, power, masculine power and leadership. His counterpart, the Empress, balances his masculine virility with her fertile femininity. This archetype embodies order, balance, stability and discipline.

Symbols & Characteristics

The Emperor is associated with Aries, the first cardinal fire sign of the zodiac ruled by Mars. Mars is also the God of War, bringing an impressive potency to this card. Aries governs the head and face as well as the frontal lobe. Ginger, the color red, and the musical note C are also associated with the Emperor. This is the fifth card of the major arcana, represented by the number four; four correlates with rulership in the material world.

Sitting with his body language open and secure, the Emperor commands attention and respect. The Emperor wears protective armor but does not raise a sword; instead the scepter in his right hand bears an ankh, or “Cross of Life” and in his right hand he holds a globe. The red garment he wears signifies passion and energy. Featured on the front of the Emperor’s throne are ram heads, a nod to Aries, signifying strong will.

Reading The Emperor Upright

The Emperor represents power, stability, protection, willfulness and authority. Upright in a reading, this card may be a sign to take action, or exercise your will. Proceeding with logic in current affairs is advisable. The Emperor possesses an energy of conviction, having rationalized his stance prior to making a move; analysis is a major theme of this card, as the frontal lobe is linked with reasoning. This card also beckons the querent to consider whether they are acting from a space of stability and integrity. This archetype defines an individual that is able to offer protection, lead and conquer.

Reading The Emperor Reversed

The Emperor reversed represents a leader who is acting rashly or stalling, unable to take the next step. Reversed, this archetype is immature or weak-willed, with little means to protect themselves or others. When reversed, the Emperor symbolizes an inability to hold space, as well as impotence. This card may be a sign to reevaluate a next move, asking the querent if this is irrational decision making.
