Science & Origin of Turritella Agate
Turritella Agate, also known as Elemia Agate, is a fossil formation consisting of ancient snail shells that have been crystallized and silicified. These ancient freshwater snails were highly abundant around 50 million years ago in the Green River Formation in present-day Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. When the snails died, their shells sank to the bottom of the lake and became covered by dirt and various sediment. Small amounts of microcrystalline silica in the groundwater slowly encompassed the cavities of the shell. This is believed to have occurred in a gel-like substance that eventually hardened over time into a Chalcedony. This brown Chalcedony is the bedrock in which the shells are hosted. Turritella Agate is abundantly found in Wyoming but can also be collected in Colorado and Utah.

Turritella Agate appeared in the market in the middle of the 20th century and was widely used as lapidary material. Due to its ease of polishing as well as its abundance of shells, it became instantly popular! While it was being officially recorded and classified as a fossiliferous agate researchers discovered a great misnaming had taken place. The Turritella genius of snails that were believed to be in the fossil was in-fact from the Elimia lineage, a very similar and close family member of Turritella snails.
