Science & Origin of Bauxite
Bauxite is an aluminum and iron oxide sedimentary rock that crystallizes in mass formations. It is formed through the weathering of aluminum and iron oxide ore and is the world’s main source for Aluminum and Gallium. Bauxite is usually composed of multiple minerals, some of which are Gibbsite, Bohemite, Diaspore, Goethite, Hematite, Kaolinite, Anatase, and Ilmenite. The color can be determined by the presence of individual minerals within Bauxite, but is mostly seen as white, grey, yellow, orange, pink, red, or brown. The discovery of this mineral took place in 1821 by French geologist Pierre Berthier in the Les Baux Provence of southern France. Bauxite has deposits all over the world, with the main localities located in Southern Australia, the country of Guinea, and Eastern China. The U.S.A. has small deposits in Arkansas, Georgia, and Alabama, but imports around 99% of its yearly consumption.
