Science & Origin of Chalcanthite
Chalcanthite is a hydrated copper sulfate that crystallizes in the form of stalactites, fibrous coatings, prismatic, tabular, botryoidal, microneedles, and masses. This crystal forms in dry caverns of open mines due to the oxidation of present copper minerals. Chalcanthite is highly fragile when exposed to moisture and is classified as a water-soluble mineral. Its color is usually a vibrant blue but can also be found in light blue, teal, sage, and green. Chalcanthite was first discovered in 1858 by Franz von Kobell and was named after the Greek word “chalkos” meaning copper, and “anthos”, meaning flower, for its floral-like crystallization. It can be found all over the world with major deposits in Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Chile, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Namibia, Canada, and the U.S.A.

Chalcanthite can be artificially grown in a lab! Be weary when purchasing this crystal, and only purchase from reputable sellers. Lab brown Chalcanthite is nearly perfect in its crystal habit and color spectrum. Natural pieces will always have imperfections and an uneven growth pattern due to the variable chemical structure as well as their hardness (2.5 out of 10 on the Mohs scale). Chalcanthite also forms around other copper minerals such as Brochantite, Malachite, and Chalcopyrite. Look for tiny inclusions of these crystals when purchasing your next piece of Chalcanthite.
