Dali Calcite, also known as Porkstone, is a variety of calcite that crystallizes in massive formations with banded patterns. The color includes brown, pink, black, and red layers of calcite banded throughout a singular color matrix, which can be a pale white or pink color. Some Dali Calcite pieces look similar to Pork, which is very popular in China, where this mineral was discovered. That is where the nickname Porkstone comes from, but its more formal name of Dali Calcite is derived from the city of Dali Bai, which is near the mine in which this stone was discovered.
