The color is bright orange and is caused by Sulphur deposit inclusions which occurred during formation 150 million years ago. There is a unique pattern on the surface of Honey Comb Calcite that resembles a repeating cell pattern or a honeycomb, which refers to its name. It was discovered in 1995 by Floyd Anderson and is only found in the Unita Mountains of Utah. The Shamrock Mining Company owns the rights to this material and the land it is on but can be found for sale by various third-party suppliers. In 2021, Honey Comb Calcite was officially recognized as the state mineral of Utah.
