Science & Origin of Black Banded Onyx
Black Banded Onyx is a variety of Chalcedony that crystallizes in massive formations. The color is usually black with white, brown, and grey striations; or the inverse, the matrix is white or grey with black and brown banding patterns throughout the stone. The most abundant locality of this stone is found throughout the country of India, although a new deposit was recently found in Afghanistan. This deposit also contains the very popular Pink Banded Onyx that has been sold throughout the market in numerous different shapes and sizes. Both Black Banded Onyx and Pink Banded Onyx have great color patterns and are popular materials to be carved and polished. These stones have been commonly hoarded by artists and miners, so acquiring raw material that is untouched and comes directly from Mother Earth has been very challenging.
