Science & Origin of Dallasite

Dallasite is a variety of Jasper breccia that crystallizes in massive formations. Multiple stones are included in the chemical composition of Dallsite, such as Quartz, Epidote, Basalt, Calcite, Pumpelleyite, and Chlorite. The color is black, white, and grey with green spotted and brecciated inclusions. Dallasite is found exclusively on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, and is named after Dallas Road on the Trans Canadian Highway. The deposit can be found on mile marker 0, but is also on most beaches throughout the island.

The stone is believed to have been formed from ancient pillow lava, which is from underwater volcanic hotspots that reach the surface and cools rapidly. This creates a hard exterior and forms the nodule shape, which allows crystal structures to thrive within. Pillow Lava is believed to be the oldest volcanic sequence on Earth, and helps us better understand the creation of our planet.
