Franklinite
Science & Origin of Franklinite
Franklinite is a zinc iron oxide mineral that crystallizes in octahedral, dodecahedral, and cubic form. It is a member of the Spinel family of minerals and can be found in a dark black color with luster, or matte black. Franklinite can be found with additional minerals such as Willemite, Calcite, and Zincite, which give it a fluorescent color when viewed under a UV light. Franklinite was discovered in 1819 by Pierre Berthier and was used as a major ore to extract Zinc for nearly 200 years. The only known deposits with large amounts of Franklinite are in New Jersey, specifically the Franklin Mine, which is it’s type locality, and the Sterling Mine in Sussex County. As of 2023, Franklinite is the official state mineral of New Jersey.
