Cancrinite

Science & Origin of Cancrinite

Cancrinite is a sodium calcium aluminum silicate mineral that crystallizes in hexagonal prisms and masses. It can form in a variety of colors such as blue, white, pink, orange, yellow, and colorless, as well as being transparent. The discovery occurred in Ilmen Nature Reserve, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia; located in the Ural mountains in 1839. The crystal was named in honor of Georg Ludwig Cancrin, the minister of finance for Russia. Since then, this crystal can be found all over the world with important deposits in Brazil, Canada, Congo, India, Italy, Namibia, Norway, Pakistan, Sweden, and the U.S.
