Science & Origin of Natrolite
Natrolite is an aluminum sodium silicate mineral and member of the Zeolite family. It crystallizes in the form of masses, fibrous, granular; as well as tall prismatic crystals. You can find Natrolite in a variety of colors such as white, blue, green, pink, yellow, brown, red, and colorless. Martin Heinrich Klaproth, a german chemist first discovered this stone in 1803 and named it after the Greek word natron meaning “soda”, due to its sodium content and “lithos” meaning stone. Natrolite is found all over the world with major deposits in Australia, Canada, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Norway, Portugal, Spain, the U.K., and the U.S.A.
Natrolite, Neptunite, and Benitoite
Neptunite and Natrolite are closely associated with one another due to the famous Benitoite discovery in San Benito, California. This one-time find of gem-grade Benitoite is only found grown atop a fibrous Natrolite-covered matrix. Occasionally throughout these pieces, you may find dark red and brown crystal clusters of Neptunite. These pieces become more valuable over time and is a highly desired crystal for any lover and collector of Mother Earths' treasures.
As of this writing (August 2022) the mine in San Benito, California is closed by the county until a proper Asbestos report can be conducted. There is no timeline as to if the mine will ever open again.
