Science & Origin of Mariposite

Mariposite, also known as Phengite and Virginite, is a variety of mica found in metamorphic rock that crystallizes in massive formations. The mica is colored by inclusions of chromium and can range from dark to light green. The matrix is usually a mix of Quartz, Marble, Ankerite, Dolomite, and Serpentine, and can be seen as white, blue, grey, and black. Mariposite is named after Mariposa County in California, where it was originally found. It was an important stone during the California gold rush, as miners noticed the presence of Mariposite was an indicator of gold veins nearby. This mineral can be found all over the world, with important localities in Canada, Japan, Ireland, China, Papua New Guinea, Sweden, Venezuela, Spain, and the USA.
