Peanut Wood

Peanut Wood

Science & Origin of Peanut Wood

Peanut Wood is a type of petrified wood formed from coniferous trees around the Cretaceous period (145-66 million years ago). Similar in size to our redwood trees, these trees are believed to have fallen and eventually swept out to sea and became driftwood. While this happened, a small clam species called Toredo began to bore holes in the wood, eventually becoming waterlogged and sinking to the ocean floor. The pieces of wood became enriched in a clay material known as radiolarian sediment and soon began to start its petrification process. This took several million years to complete and is now in a region completely dry and under several feet of clay. The area is known as the Kennedy Ranges and is about 100 miles east of Carnarvon, Western Australia.

The name Peanut Wood is derived from its appearance, which resembles small white peanuts within a dark brown matrix. This fossilized botanical can also be completely white, black, brown, red, or yellow. The material is usually processed as tumbled pocket stones, cut into slabs, used as home interior decorations, as well as even polished into jewelry.
