Science & Origin of Hyalite Opal

Hyalite Opal also known as Muller’s Glass, Water Opal, and Jalie is a fluorescent and transparent variety of Opal that crystallizes in botryoidal and globular forms. This Opal can range in color from clear to white to light grey; and appears bright green under Ultraviolet light. Franz-Joseph Müller von Reichenstein, an Austrian mineralogist discovered this stone and chose to name it after himself; Muller’s Glass. The naming Hyalite Opal comes from the Greek word “hialos”, meaning “glass”, this was officially recorded by A.G. Werner in 1794. Hyalite Opal can be found in Mexico, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Australia, and the U.S.A.
