Sanidine is a potassium feldspar mineral that crystallizes in tabular crystals, twinning prismatic formations, and masses. This feldspar variety is also commonly known to crystallize in granular formation in volcanic-rich rocks such as rhyolite. Sanidine is usually light in color and can appear in white, grey, cream, yellow, and brown hues, as well as being colorless. It was first discovered in 1808 by K.W. Nose in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and was named after the Greek words “sanis” and “idos”, referring to its tablet and plate-like appearance. Sanidine can now be found throughout the world with large deposits in Italy, France, Greece, Canada, Australia, China, and the U.S.
