Villiaumite

Villiaumite

Science & Origin of Villiaumite

Villiaumite is a rare halide sodium fluoride mineral that crystallizes in the form of small cubic crystals, thin granular layers of a matrix, and mass formation. The color is determined through sodium impurities within Villiaumite and can range from dark red to light orange and even pink, and purple. This mineral is water soluble and very brittle and should be handled with care and caution. Villiaumite was first discovered in 1908 on Rouma Island, Los Archipelago (Los Islands), Conakry Region, Guinea, and was named after French explorer Maxime Villiaume. Since then, minor localities have been found throughout the world in countries such as Brazil, Canada, Greenland, Kenya, Namibia, Norway, Russia, and the USA.
