Alurgite, also known as Red Mica and Red Muscovite, is a variety of Muscovite that crystallizes in bladed crystals, usually on a schist or quartz matrix. The color ranges from a deep red or maroon color to a light purple or brown. These hues are caused by impurities of Manganese. Alurgite was discovered in 1865 by J.F.H. Breithaupt in the Praborna Mine in Saint-Marcel, Aosta Valley, Italy. The name comes from the Greek word "Halourges", which means "genuine purple dye from the sea". This unique reference is a description of the color of the Alurgite that was found in the mountainous region of Italy. Since the initial discovery, Alurgite can be found in Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Greece, India, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Zambia, and the U.S.A.
