Science & Origin of Anorthosite
Anorthosite is an igneous calcium plagioclase feldspar mineral that crystallizes in mass formations. Some minerals that can also be found as trace amounts in the chemical composition are Magnetite, Olivine, Illmenite, Clinopyroxene, and Amphibole. The color is usually dark blue, grey, or black, but can also be seen with an iridescence flash caused by inclusions of Labradorite. Anorthosite can be found in any area with a history of tectonic activity, as this mineral is brought to the surface through geological changes of the planet. Some notable localities include the Saguenay Mass in eastern Canada, which contains around 60,000 square miles of Anorthosite under the surface. Notable localities also include Norway, Ukraine, South Africa, and the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern U.S.
This mineral is created within the Earth’s crust during a process called magmatic differentiation which is the separation of a variety of minerals during the cooling process of magma. As the Magma cools, minerals begin to separate and concentrate by their density, which can lead to large areas of crystals with similar chemical compositions forming together. This is the process that created Anorthosite around 1-2.5 billion years ago.

Anorthosite is a geological indication of age and activity within a planet or celestial rock. This mineral has been found on our lunar surface and actually makes up around 80% of the lunar highlands. When geologist study these specimens brought back by the Apollo Program in 1969-1972, they are able to learn about our moon’s history, formation, cosmic impaction, and creation. Since the heavy scientific concentration of Mars and its geological presence, 8 sights in the Martian southern highlands have been found to contain Anorthosite, suggesting heavy magmatic processes occurred at some point on ancient Mars.
