Green Hopeite is a hydrated zinc phosphate mineral that crystallizes in slender prisms, aggregates, crusts, prismatic shards, and botryoidal formations. It is formed by the oxidation of Sphalerite when there is a high presence of phosphate solutions. The color can be light or dark green, depending on the amount of zinc present during its formation. The mineral was first discovered in 1822 at the Altenberg mine, Kelmis, Liège, Wallonia, Belgium by David Brewser. He named it after Thomas Charles Hope, a professor of chemistry at the University of Edinburgh who discovered the alkaline Earth metal Strontium. Green Hopeite can be found in Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, China, Germany, South Africa, Zambia, and the USA.
