Skeletal Quartz is a variety of Quartz that crystallizes in prismatic points that can occur singularly or in multiples. Its crystal structure is a primary quartz crystallization with a secondary milky layer that resembles small botryoidal formations. These points can be as small as .5 inches and can go as big as 6 or even 8 inches. The secondary quartz coating is usually a grey color, but can also be yellow or brown due to iron impurities. This specific type of Quartz comes from a small deposit in China and is only sold in its raw form.
Skeletal Quartz is usually a name given to Elestial Quartz, or Window Quartz, but in China, this name was specifically given to this new variety of Quartz. Little is known as to the reason for the naming, or even when this mineral was discovered, but it is common practice among the mineral community in foreign countries to label a stone with an already established name due to common knowledge and heightened sale value.
