Science & Origin of Kobyashevite
Kobyashevite is a copper sulfate hydroxide hydrate mineral that crystalizes in small elongated crystals, crusts, or as a coating of another mineral. Selenite and Calcite crystals can commonly form over Kobyashevite, increasing its visual appearance and fragility. This mineral forms in Calcite, Quartz, and Gypsum veins and is usually a light blue, teal, turquoise, or green color. The initial discovery of this mineral took place in Kapital'naya mine, Buldym Lake, Vishnevye Mountains, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, and was named in honor of Yurii S. Kobyashev, a Russian mineralogist. Since then, the only other locations of Kobyashevite are in Durango, Mexico at the Ojuela Mine, and California in Inyo County at the Santa Rosa Mine.
Fake vs. Real
There is a lot of speculation that some of the secondary minerals on Kobyashevite can be faked and altered after its discovery to increase its appearance and value. Some researchers and geologists believe a secondary coating of calcite and selenite crystals is formed artificially after lower-quality Kobyashevite has been acquired from the mine. This is very challenging to distinguish because naturally, these minerals do occur together on Kobyashevite, but can also be easily grown as well. Some ways of telling if the mineral is fake or real is the pattern of needles on the surface of the crystal and if the color of the Kobyashevite is more green than blue. A lot of the fake material is greener and the selenite crystals are much more white instead of transparent.
