Science & Origin of Imperial Topaz

Imperial Topaz, also known as Golden Topaz, is an aluminum silicate fluoride hydroxide mineral that crystallizes in the form of small prismatic crystals. The color is usually a dark orange that may be semi-transparent, but can also be seen as light red-orange-yellow as well. This color of Topaz can occur naturally, although it is extremely rare. This has led to the market being flooded with heat treated and dyed Colorless Topaz which is being sold as natural Imperial Topaz. As stated in the Colorless Topaz article, it is extremely important to know who you are buying your Topaz crystals from. Especially Imperial Topaz, because it is the most challenging color to identify whether or not it's been treated or not. One suggestion is to look at the piece very closely and examine every small crevice. If it looks too perfect and extremely pure at a lower than average Topaz price range, it has more than likely been treated. To avoid these infuriating purchases, find out as much information as possible on your Topaz dealer’s goods. Most natural Imperial Topaz comes from a few towns in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil. Specifically, the towns of Ouro Prêto, Dom Bosco, Rodrigo Silva, and Saramenha are all heavy producers of natural Imperial Topaz. Aside from Brazil, this Topaz variety is also found in Chelyabinsk, Russia, and the Topaz Mountains in western Utah.
