Indonesian Blue Amber, also known as Sumatran Blue Amber, is a variety of Amber that crystallizes from ancient tree resin in massive formations. The trees are known as Hymenaea Protera, and are believed to have existed around 15- 20 million years ago. This species is a member of the legume family and likely has produced a majority of the amber we collect from all over the world. The colors of brown, blue, and violet are caused by naturally occurring impurities of a hydrocarbon component known as perylene.
Unique Formation & Location
Indonesian Blue Amber is only found on the largest Island of Indonesia, Sumatra, and is where the more localized name of Sumatran Blue Amber is derived from. The only other blue amber we have discovered on planet Earth comes from the Dominican Republic, which has a different appearance and is not as dark. The amber from the Sumatra region of Indonesia is UV reactive and will exhibit a bright blue fluorescence light, which is popular for mineral and fossil collectors.
