Science & Origin of Tsavorite Garnet
Tsavorite Garnet is a green variety of Grossular Garnet that crystallizes in the form of masses, dodecahedral crystals, small prismatic shards, and tiny granular pieces. This stone was first discovered in Tanzania in 1967 by Campbell R. Brides. During this time in history, exporting anything out of Tanzania was nearly impossible. This caused the discovery to be nearly forgotten about until 4 years later in 1971. Campbell discovered an additional vein of Tsavorite Garnet in nearby Kenya at the Tsavo National Game Park. It officially became recorded as its type location (as suggested by the president of Tiffany and Co.) and was able to be shared with the world. The ever-present green color is made from a combination of Vanadium and Chrome within the mineral.
